How the abortion pill works
Medication abortion uses two medicines. The first, mifepristone, stops the pregnancy from continuing. The second, misoprostol, is taken afterwards as your doctor directs, and causes cramping and bleeding that empty the uterus, much like an early miscarriage.
Most of the process happens at home, in your own time and privacy. You will have a follow-up so we can confirm it is complete.
Florida law and timing
Florida law allows abortion only in early pregnancy: in most cases up to six weeks, counted from the first day of your last period. A few narrow exceptions exist. Because that window is short, call as soon as you think you may be pregnant.
Florida also requires that the abortion pill be given to you in person, so this is an in-clinic visit rather than something arranged online or by mail.
What to expect at your visit
- A private conversation with a doctor about your options, with no pressure in any direction.
- A sonogram to confirm the pregnancy and date it, which decides whether the pill is an option for you.
- Clear instructions for the second medicine and what the hours afterwards will feel like.
- Cramping and bleeding heavier than a period, usually strongest for a few hours.
- Pain medication options, and a number you can call with any question.
- A follow-up visit to confirm the abortion is complete.
When to call us right away
Call us, or get emergency care, if you soak through two or more large pads an hour for two hours in a row, have a fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher lasting more than 4 hours, or have severe pain that medication does not relieve.
Deciding between the pill and a procedure
Both are safe and effective in early pregnancy, and the right one depends on how far along you are, your health, and how you would rather go through it. Some people want it over with in one visit; others would rather be at home.
We will go through both with you at your consultation. Nobody here will push you toward one.
Frequently asked questions
Does the abortion pill hurt?
You should expect strong cramping, usually worse than a period, along with bleeding. How much it hurts varies a lot from person to person. We will talk with you about pain medication before you leave the clinic.
How long does the bleeding last?
The heaviest bleeding is usually over within several hours of the second medicine. Lighter bleeding or spotting can continue on and off for a couple of weeks. Your doctor will tell you what is normal for you and when to call.
Will anybody find out?
Your visit and your records are confidential. We do not discuss your care with anyone without your permission.
Can I still have children afterwards?
A medication abortion does not reduce your chances of getting pregnant later. In fact you can become pregnant again very soon afterwards, so it is worth talking with us about birth control at your follow-up.
What if I am past six weeks?
Call us anyway. A sonogram is the only way to know for certain how far along you are, and dates people work out at home are often wrong in both directions. We will tell you honestly what we can and cannot do.
