What the procedure involves
After a sonogram confirms how far along you are, the doctor gently opens the cervix and empties the uterus with suction. The procedure itself takes only a few minutes. Most of your time here is spent on the visit before and the recovery afterwards.
You will rest in our recovery area until you are steady on your feet, and we will go over what to expect over the next few days before you leave.
Florida law and timing
Florida law allows abortion only in early pregnancy: in most cases up to six weeks, counted from the first day of your last period. A few narrow exceptions exist. Because that window is short, call as soon as you think you may be pregnant.
Anesthesia and pain medication
You are not expected to get through this on willpower. We offer a range of sedation, and the choice is yours to make with the doctor once they know your health history.
- Local anesthesia, which numbs the cervix while you stay fully awake.
- Intramuscular sedation, sometimes called twilight, which leaves you drowsy and relaxed.
- IV sedation, given through a vein, which takes you deeper still.
- Pain medication to take at home afterwards, discussed before you leave.
Planning the day
- Arrange for an adult to drive you home if you are having any sedation. You cannot drive yourself.
- Follow the doctor’s instructions about eating and drinking beforehand, which depend on the sedation you choose.
- Wear comfortable clothing and bring sanitary pads.
- Set the day aside. Plan to rest rather than go back to work.
When to call us right away
Call us, or get emergency care, if you soak through two or more large pads an hour for two hours in a row, have a fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher lasting more than 4 hours, or have severe pain that medication does not relieve.
The other option
In very early pregnancy the abortion pill may also be available to you. It happens mostly at home over a day or two rather than in one visit here.

Will I be asleep?
That depends on the sedation you and your doctor choose. With local anesthesia you are fully awake; with IV sedation you will be drowsy and remember little. We will explain each option before you decide.
Do I need someone to come with me?
If you are having any sedation beyond local anesthesia, yes: an adult has to drive you home. You will not be allowed to drive yourself.
When can I go back to work?
Many people feel ready the next day, but it varies. Plan to rest the day of the procedure and see how you feel. Your doctor will give you instructions based on your situation.
When will my period come back?
Usually within four to eight weeks. You can become pregnant before that first period arrives, so talk to us about birth control before you leave.
