The two kinds
Hormonal IUDs release a small amount of progestin. They often make periods lighter, and for some people periods stop altogether.
The copper IUD uses no hormones at all. It can make periods heavier or crampier, especially in the first few months, and it is the option people choose when they want to avoid hormones.
How many years each one lasts depends on the specific device. Your doctor will tell you which you are getting and when it needs replacing.
Having it placed
- An exam first, to check the position and size of your uterus.
- The placement itself, which takes only a few minutes.
- Cramping during and after, which varies a lot between people. Ask about pain medication beforehand.
- A short rest afterwards if you need it before you drive.
- Instructions for checking the strings and what to watch for.
Having it removed
Removal is usually quicker and easier than placement. You can have it removed at any time, for any reason, including because you want to get pregnant. Fertility returns quickly afterwards.
Do not try to remove an IUD yourself. Come in and let a clinician do it.
When to call us
Call if you develop a fever, severe or worsening pelvic pain, unusual discharge with a bad smell, very heavy bleeding, or if you cannot feel the strings and think the IUD may have moved.
